Announcement: Galileo Galilei Award

The Galileo Galilei Award in Medical Physics is given every year to the best paper published in this journal in the previous year.

In 2021, the prize has been awarded to Oliver Diaz et al., “Data preparation for artificial intelligence in medical imaging: A comprehensive guide to open-access platforms and tools”, Phys. Med. 2021;83:25-37.

Physica Medica - the European Journal of Medical Physics, is happy to announce that the paper “A new solution for UHDP and UHDR (Flash) measurements: theory and conceptual design of ALLS chamber” by Fabio Di Martino, Damiano Del Sarto, Maria Giuseppina Bisogni, Simone Capaccioli, Federica Galante, Alessia Gasperini, Stefania Linsalata, Giulia Mariani, Matteo Pacitti, Fabiola Paiar, Stefano Ursino, Verdi Vanreusel, Dirk Verellen, Giuseppe Felici, published in Physica Medica, Volume 102, August 2022, Pages 9-18, DOI: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ejmp.2022.08.010, has been elected the best paper published in the journal in the year 2022.

As the title clearly indicates, this paper presents the theory and the methodological steps towards the design of a gas chamber to be used for measurements under ultra-high dose-per-pulse regimens required in order to deliver FLASH treatments, answering thus one of the key challenges in current radiotherapy. The ionization chamber presented in this paper has novel features intended to minimize the ion/electron recombination and to avoid the discharge regimen. Given the ever increasing interest in the development and the clinical implementation of the irradiation techniques that would allow the observance of the FLASH-sparring effect, this work is expected to have a substantial contribution to the field.

The selection of the best paper has been performed on the basis of citations and downloads together with the assessment by the Editors, Associate Editors and members of the Editorial Board.

We congratulate the authors for this paper, as the winners of the Galileo Galilei Award 2022.
